Iloilo City (31 May) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH VI) will make sure that roads leading to the new Iloilo International Airport will be completed as scheduled.

Director Rolando Asis of the DPWH VI said that the construction of Iloilo City-Sta. Barbara Road, Pavia-Sta, Barbara section has an appropriation of P50 million.

The construction was started March 29, 2007 and is expected that the project construction will be completed by November 2007, Director Asis said.

“The scope of work involves the widening of 3.895 kilometers existing asphalt concrete road by 3.05 wide and 0.05 meter thick with 1.50 meters wide shoulder both sides to include clearing and grubbing, unsuitable excavation, embankment, aggregates sub-base, crushed aggregates. Base course, installation of RCPC grouted riprap and slope protection,” Director Asis further said.

Engr. Cecil Caligan, chief of the DPWH VI Management Staff explained that the project is one of the infrastructure projects that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo outlined in her 2006 State of-the-Nation Address or SONA.

He said that the road project is the initial section of the Iloilo-Aklan Road that traverses the Central Panay area. It will function as the main access road leading to the new Iloilo International Airport located in the municipalities of Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan.

The project when completed will address possible traffic congestion as it serves as the lead support road to the new Iloilo International Airport.

With the new Iloilo International Airport and good road networks, this surely will help boost economic activity and tourism in the island, Engr. Caligan concluded. (PIA)
